Évora, Portugal

Évora is the capital of the Évora district and a municipality of the Alentejo (53 577 inhabitants · 1 307 km²), built on a low hill inside medieval walls, about 130 kilometres east of Lisbon. Its old town, with a Roman temple, a medieval cathedral and the palaces and convents of a royal residence of the 15th and 16th centuries, is the Historic Centre of Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986.

• Roman Temple: a temple of the 1st century AD with fourteen Corinthian columns, probably dedicated to the cult of Augustus.
• Évora Cathedral: a granite cathedral begun in 1186 and completed in 1250, on the highest point of the city.
• Chapel of Bones: a 17th-century chapel of the Church of São Francisco lined with human bones and skulls.
• Água de Prata Aqueduct: an aqueduct of about 18 kilometres, opened in 1537 and still carrying water into the city.
• Almendres Cromlech: a Neolithic circle of about 95 standing stones in the countryside west of the city.
