Alcântara
The neighbourhood of Alcântara is located near the Tagus River, at the northern end of the Ponte 25 de Abril — Lisbon’s oldest bridge, built by the American Bridge Company, the same firm that constructed the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge; it visually resembles the Golden Gate Bridge due to its shared suspension design and International Orange colour. Alcântara evolved from an agricultural and royal holiday retreat between the 18th and 20th centuries into an industrial zone during the second half of the 20th century. This Lisbon neighbourhood presents great diversity, featuring two of the city’s largest green spaces: the Parque Florestal de Monsanto and the Tapada da Ajuda; four and five-storey buildings constructed in the 20th century; the Ponte 25 de Abril; the Doca de Santo Amaro, with moorings for 331 vessels; the Aqueduto das Águas Livres; pedestrian corridors and cycle paths along the Tagus, where people can be seen relaxing or exercising safely; the Docas de Alcântara, one of the city’s best-known nightlife destinations; and a warehouse complex housing the LX Factory, home to company offices, cafés, restaurants and many other businesses.

LX Factory is a space much sought after by young artists, designers and other creative professionals. Alcântara has been undergoing rehabilitation through several urban projects, notably the Corredor Verde Estruturante do Vale de Alcântara, which aims to connect the Parque Florestal de Monsanto to the Tagus River via cycle paths and pedestrian walkways. Alcântara is one of Lisbon’s most attractive and safe areas, ideal for living, leisure and doing business.
The name Alcântara comes from the Arabic al-qantara, meaning bridge.

Alcântara is administered by the Junta de Freguesia de Alcântara.
