Avenida Marginal, Coastal Link between Lisbon and Cascais
The Avenida Marginal is a coastal road with a pedestrian promenade and cycle path, running parallel to the Atlantic Ocean and the Tagus River, approximately 35 km long, connecting Lisbon and Cascais. The Avenida Marginal is also known as Costa do Sol, and is very popular in the summer with Lisbon residents and tourists due to the various beaches with extensive sandy shores along the coast. The Avenida Marginal can be traversed in several ways, including by car or motorcycle via the road alongside the Tagus River and the Atlantic Ocean, by train, from Cais do Sodré train station in Lisbon to the train station in Cascais, or on foot or by bicycle along the seawall that runs through the Cascais Line. The Avenida Marginal is a magnificent location from a cultural perspective, due to the presence of numerous palaces, mansions, villas, and fortresses built over the centuries, where it is possible to observe a magnificent sunset over the Atlantic Ocean.
The Lisbon section of the Avenida Marginal Costa do Sol includes localities such as Paço de Arcos, considered by its residents to be the most charming village in Portugal, Carcavelos, where the first bodysurf club in Portugal was founded in 1940, and the locality of Parede, well-known for its iodine-rich beaches and sought after for the healing properties of its waters, and home to one of Europe's best orthopedic hospitals.
The Avenida Marginal area has been revitalized in recent years due to several projects, including the Nova School of Business & Economics in Carcavelos, a university campus with capacity for approximately 4,000 students and faculty, the creation of the third El Corte Inglés shopping center in Carcavelos, the establishment of a business hub at Bateria de São Gonçalo in Parede, the construction of a Surf Center by Quiksilver in Carcavelos, and the Quinta dos Ingleses urban development plan covering approximately 20 hectares, which includes a business center and 14-story buildings near the Atlantic Ocean.
