Art Nouveau of Aveiro

Art Nouveau marked the buildings of Aveiro between about 1904 and 1920, when merchants of the city built houses with curved lines, flowers and animals in stone, tiles and wrought iron. The best known is the Casa Major Pessoa, built between 1907 and 1909 for the businessman Mário Belmonte Pessoa, which today holds the Art Nouveau Museum.

The city belongs to the Réseau Art Nouveau Network, the European network of Art Nouveau cities.

What to see in Art Nouveau Aveiro

Casa Major Pessoa: the house attributed to the architect Francisco Augusto da Silva Rocha, perhaps with Ernesto Korrodi, with flowers, leaves and an eagle carved in its stonework, classified as a Property of Public Interest.
Art Nouveau Museum: the museum inside the house, which explains the movement in the city and serves as the start of a route through its buildings.
Tea room: a tea room in the back of the house, where the ovos moles of Aveiro are served.
Canal-side houses: the other Art Nouveau fronts along the central canal and the streets of the centre.

History of Art Nouveau in Aveiro

1904 to 1920: Art Nouveau spreads through the city, above all in the work of Francisco Augusto da Silva Rocha, with Ernesto Korrodi, Jaime Inácio dos Santos and José de Pinho.
1907 to 1909: the Casa Major Pessoa is built.
2008: the Art Nouveau Museum opens in the house.

Visiting Art Nouveau Aveiro

Location: the museum stands by the central canal, near the Rossio.
Route: the museum is the starting point of a walking route through the Art Nouveau buildings of the city.
Tickets: the museum is part of the Museu da Cidade group, with the Troncalhada ecomuseum and the Aveiro Museum.
