Viriato is the most important mythological figure in Portuguese history, the Lusitanian hero from the Viseu region who resisted the Roman invaders in the 2nd century. In 572, during the Visigothic occupation, the settlement of Viseu already had a bishop. In the 8th century, Viseu was occupied by the Muslims and reconquered by Ferdinand I, King of León and Castile, in 1058. Viseu was the residence of Count D. Henrique and D. Teresa; it was D. Teresa who granted the charter in 1123. This locality began to grow in the 14th century and was donated in 1416 to Prince Henry during the 15th century. Viseu’s growth was interrupted by a storm in the 17th century that destroyed most of the city, which subsequently recovered in the 19th century with the reconstruction of the city, notably the building housing Viseu City Hall and Rua Formosa, the main access to the historic center.
