The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is a Baroque pilgrimage church on the hill of Santo Estêvão above the city of Lamego, joined to the city centre by a stairway of 686 steps in nine flights. Work on the present sanctuary began in 1750 and ended in 1905, when its second tower was completed.
The sanctuary, its stairway and its park are classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1984.
What to see at the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios
- Stairway: 686 steps in nine flights, with landings decorated with chapels, statues, fountains, obelisks and tile panels.
- Pátio dos Reis: a courtyard on the stairway with statues of the kings of Israel.
- Church: a Rococo interior dedicated to the Virgin, with a gilded high altar, three stained-glass windows and tile panels by the painter Miguel Costa showing the life of Mary.
- Park of Santo Estêvão: the wooded park around the sanctuary.
History of the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios
- 1361: a chapel dedicated to Santo Estêvão is built on the hill.
- 1568: the chapel is demolished and a new church is built, where an image of the Virgin and Child is placed. Devotion moves over time from Santo Estêvão to Nossa Senhora dos Remédios.
- 1750: work begins on the present sanctuary.
- 1905: the second tower is completed, 155 years after the start of the works.
- 1984: the sanctuary, stairway and park are classified as a Property of Public Interest.
Visiting the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios
- The climb: the stairway starts from Avenida Dr. Alfredo de Sousa in the centre of Lamego, and a road also reaches the top.
- Festival: the festivities of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios take place between August and 8 September, the main day of the pilgrimage.
