Porto de Leixões lies at the mouth of the Leça river, between Matosinhos to the south and Leça da Palmeira to the north, about four kilometres north of the Douro. It is an artificial harbour built behind breakwaters and serves as the main commercial port of northern Portugal. The recreational dock at the root of the north mole is run under concession by an association of sailing clubs.
