The Escola Portuguesa de Arte Equestre was founded in 1979 and is the successor of the Picaria Real, the riding academy of the Portuguese royal court closed in the nineteenth century. It has been based in the gardens of the Palácio Nacional de Queluz since 1996, and since 2015 gives its public performances at the Picadeiro Henrique Calado on Calçada da Ajuda in Belém, where training sessions are also open to visitors. The school keeps 49 Alter Real Lusitano horses bred at the Coudelaria de Alter. In 2024 UNESCO inscribed Portuguese equestrian art on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Parques de Sintra has managed the school since 2012.
